The American fashion company Gap (Gai Pu) announced that it will ensure that all cotton materials used will be purchased from "more sustainable sources" in 2025.

Most of the Gap group's products are made of cotton, and cotton has been provided to farmers in many areas and stimulated the local economy.

However, most of the cotton in the world is growing in areas difficult to obtain clean water, mainly due to pollution and drought, and climate change has further exacerbated this situation.

According to the Gap group's 2016 Research Report Life Cycle Assessment Study (life cycle assessment), a pair of jeans needs an average of 1600 gallons of water throughout the supply chain, 64% of which are used for cotton cultivation.

The Gap group hopes to support farmers who are able to use water efficiently by purchasing sustainable plants and sustainable sources of cotton.

Gap group's three major brands Gap (Gai Pu), Old Navy (Old Navy), Banana Republic (Banana Republic) have responded to the call.

Gap brand plans to purchase cotton from more sustainable sources by 2021.

Old Navy will increase the supply of sustainable cotton to 100% by 2022.

Banana Republic will also raise all cotton to a more sustainable level by 2023.

"We are proud to make innovations in protecting natural resources and create cleaner and safer lives for families around the world," said Keith White, executive vice president of global sustainable development at Gap group.

Buying cotton in a way that reduces water consumption and destroys climate is to create a healthy environment for our children and future generations. "

Gap group has been committed to sustainable development since the early 90s, when they set labor standards for garment manufacturers in the supply chain.

In 2016, Gap group began to purchase cotton Better Cotton Initiative (hereinafter referred to as BCI) of the good cotton Development Association of Switzerland.

BCI is a non-profit international member organization and a social responsibility advocate for cotton related industries. It aims to develop and promote a good planting environment.

In the ranking of BCI's latest global sustainable BCI cotton procurement company, Gap group is ranked fourth.

In December 2018, Gap group became one of the 43 signatories of the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action (the fashion industry climate action Charter).

Recently, Gap group announced in May that Old Navy, Gap and Banana Republic brand will introduce a denim, and its consumption rate of mechanical recycling cotton after consumption is only 5%.

At the same time, Gap group's Athleta and Hill City two brands have passed the B Corporations sustainable certification.
